Glenfiddich Fire and Cane Experiment 04 Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700mL

Glenfiddich Fire and Cane Experiment 04 --> Here is the story Back in 2003, Glenfiddich malt master Brian Kinsman ran peated spirit through the distillery’s stills. (Note that because this is Glenfiddich, the peaty aromas and flavours you’ll get will be unlike those of your traditional Islays. The peat used in Fire & Cane is from Speyside, collected from the hills.) Kinsman then married the result of that highly noteworthy experiment with bourbon-matured, non-peated whisky—the Glenfiddich that we’re all familiar with. So that yielded a whisky that was smoky yet fruity.

Kinsman who has had free reign make these experimental whiskies had the brilliant idea of finishing the married whisky in Latin rum casks—sourced from a number of South American countries—for three months. In the end, he got a peated 43% ABV Scotch that comes in at 5 ppm (phenol parts per million)—quite good work for a distillery that doesn’t typically make smoky Scotches.

Fire & Cane comes in a coloured glass that seamlessly transitions from a black/brown base to clear glass, displaying the world’s best-selling single malt Scotch whisky. The bottle was designed to showcase the juxtaposing flavours physically with the shift in colour.

Glenfiddich Fire and Cane Experiment 04 The fourth and the latest expression to be added to the ‘Experimental Series’ by Glenfiddich is officially announced – Glenfiddich Fire and Cane a peated single malt finished in rum casks. Back in 2016, Glenfiddich announced the launch of a new series which they defined as ‘ a new series that embodies our family philosophy of freedom and possibilities, to create a range of ground-breaking single malts.’ Regarding the new lineup Malt Master Brian Kinsman had commented; “Only by unlearning what we know and collaborating with like-minded mavericks can we try new things, experiment, push whisky boundaries and challenge traditions” The first expression to be released was the Glenfiddich IPA Experiment, where an innovative new craft ale was crafted just for this occasion which was used to finish the Glenfiddich single malt. The second creation was called Glenfiddich XX (Twenty in Roman Numerals). A special single malt created from the casks individually picked by 20 whisky experts. Last year, Glenfiddich released the third bottle from this innovative lineup. Glenfiddich Winter Storm, a 21-Year-Old whisky finished in French Oak Canadian Ice Wine casks from the Peller Estates. The latest experiment, Glenfiddich Fire and Cane is defined as ‘a bold fusion of smoky and sweet notes’ which is somewhat untypical for Glenfiddich thanks to the usage of peated whisky. According to the company; Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich Malt Master, was an apprentice when the company ran peated whisky through their stills, a first for Glenfiddich. Years later, Brian married these smoky malts with the brands signature sweet and fruity whisky before finishing them in Latin rum casks to overlay a complex additional caramel sweetness and create Glenfiddich Fire and Cane Glenfiddich Fire and Cane is a NAS (Non-Age statement) product with an alcohol level of 43% ABV.

Glenfiddich Fire and Cane Official Tasting Notes

Colour: Golden Nose: Billowing soft peat notes, like distant smoke on the wind. Rich sweet toffee with zesty fresh fruit notes and spiciness.

Palate: Like a Highland peat campfire, with oak notes and toffee. Sharp green fruit, sweet baked apple and soft smoke.

Finish: Lingering smokiness and sweetness

Glenfiddich Fire & Cane features a fusion of two bold flavours coming together to form the unexpected combination of smoky Glenfiddich whisky finished in sweet rum casks. Fire & Cane is inspired by the early innovation of Glenfiddich Malt Master Brian Kinsman, who in 2003, first ran peated spirit through the Glenfiddich stills, birthing the concept of what would become the innovative Experimental Series. As the fourth expression of the Experimental Series, Fire & Cane fuses the brand’s smoky whisky with malts that had been maturing side-by-side in bourbon casks, showcasing Glenfiddich’s sweet and fruity signature style. Taking it a step further, all of the whiskies were finished in Latin rum casks to produce a surprising overlay of added caramel toffee sweetness.
