60 ml (2 oz) Belvedere 10 ml (1/4 oz) dry vermouth 1 Sicilian green olive (washed) 5 ml (dash) Sicilian green olive brine Gently muddle olives in base of mixing glass. Add remaining ingredients and shake hard with ice. Double strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a single Sicilian green olive.

They want to change the traditional image of vodka with a new dark look. Oak by Absolut is aged in Swedish, French and American oak barrels to infuse with a smoky flavour with a hint of vanilla and caramel. Even more interesting, it gives the vodka a dark, almost rum-like colouring.

A New Face of Vodka

After one hundred years of making clear vodka, this creates an interesting new paradigm for vodka. Inspired by bartenders aging their own cocktails, Absolut have created a vodka that can be mixed into cocktails previously reserved for darker liquors. Their website suggests a few clever twists on traditional flavours, like the Oak Mule and the Oak Sour, as well as simple mixes like Oak and Cola, and the Oak and Ginger.

People are used to vodka being a stronger drink, something with a forceful flavour, but by aging it in the oak barrels, Absolut have created a smoother texture and flavour. This kind of breaks the rules for what people know about vodka. As a result of their new process, they have created a vodka with a depth of character and smoothness to the flavour, as well as one that stacks up against other dark liquors.

Enjoying their runaway success with their long line of flavoured vodkas, Absolut don’t seem content to sit on their laurels. They recognise the importance of continued innovation. The key of course for the marketing types at the liquor companies is to match the personality with the intended audience. The brashness of rap stars Puff Daddy and 50 Cent have worked well for a vodka aimed at the younger audience.

A more discerning audience may be attracted by a marketing campaign based around a more mature celebrity. Such has been the sophistication of the finely-tuned advertising campaigns aimed at the drinks’ demographics.

The changing style of tequila is a case in point. Now consumers are starting to favour 100 percent agave tequila brands such as Patron rather than the sometimes low quality mixed varieties. Some credit for this explosion in preference for artisan brands must go to celebrities such as George Clooney and Sean (P.Diddy) Combs for not only endorsing, but investing in top shelf brands.

The touch of style, glitz and glamour is a potent marketing weapon for liquor sellers, one that will bring rich rewards for makers of these products. The “personality” of the brand is matched to the image the celebrity projects, a marketing ploy that works as well for clothes, shoes and fashion accessories as it does for drinks. And the name of the celebrity porn star? Why Ron Jeremy of course and his aptly-named Ron de Jeremy Hardcore Edition Spiced Rum.

We all know that social media has fast become the epic scene of battles between celebrities but the stoush between rappers 50 Cent and P. Diddy back in November was different.

Was it an artistic dispute? A rivalry over girlfriends? Money? No, the brouhaha arose as a result of both rappers doing promotional work for separate vodka companies: 50 Cent with Effen and P. Diddy with Ciroc.

The dispute was ignited when 50 Cent posted a picture to his Instagram account, showing P. Diddy in an unfortunate (and well…extremely compromising) embrace of an overweight lady. But it wasn’t the pic that caused the stir, more the caption which tended to belittle P. Diddy’s brand.

While the photo caused a riot on social media, with criticism of the body shaming tactics of 50 Cent, the man himself seemed unworried by the attention.

In a cryptic reply which seemed to hint at the dispute P. Diddy said: “If it ain’t making me money, making me better or making me happy… ain’t making time for it.”

So have the pair sat down and settled their differences over a glass of vodka? It seems that whether the dispute goes on or not, both are on a winner when it comes to vodka promotion.

Sweden’s Winter Wheat is a magical product. It is planted in Autumn and the seeds remain in the rich soil throughout the arctic winter.  Biological impurities do not survive these harsh conditions.

Australian film director Baz Luhrmann has been enlisted to create the first ever Absolut limited edition bottle celebrating Australia. The collaboration is called Absolut Oz and will see a very limited number of  1 litre sized bottle available in leading liquor stores across Australia during March 2014.

Managing director of Pernod Ricard Australia, Julien Hemard said: “We are extremely pleased and proud to be collaborating with one of the great visionary minds of the contemporary world in Baz to realise the first Australian ABSOLUT limited edition. Baz is one of the world’s renowned inspirations in creativity. Working with ABSOLUT, Baz has captured the unique essence of Australia.”

As part of the creation of Absolut Oz, Baz Luhrmann travelled to the Southern Sweden town of Ahus, home to the Absolut distillery and the sole source of the pure water which goes into each and every bottle of Absolut. At Absolut HQ he trialled and experimented with various ingredients which would eventually go to make up this quintessential blend that aims to capture the essence of a chapter in the unique story that is Australia.

Inspired by Australia’s robust and deeply seeded beach culture, Luhrmann believes Australian taste palettes, like other senses such as smell, has the power to transport us to places both known and imagined, and this became his mission when he found himself in the snow bound Swedish landscape back in December 2012.

At this point Luhrmann was neck deep in the final stages of his feature film, ‘Gatsby’.

Luhrmann had this to say: “Working for the last three years on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel,  it has been very hard not to think about alcohol, as, after all, ‘The Roaring 20’s’ were a time of Prohibition, when, of course, everyone drank. And my wife Catherine and I did our research. For Catherine it is about the champagne. But for me it is about the cocktail. And it is hard to think about the cocktail without thinking about great vodka.

“Absolut Oz is a distillation of the unifying truth that we are all equal under the sun”, Luhrmann added. “While creating the drinks which feature and celebrate Absolut Oz, we reflected on that moment when the sun dips below the horizon and, as we say in the movies, the magic hour is upon us.”

Luhrmann worked closely with Absolut to create four special cocktails, each of which is a toast to four famous beaches around Australia. They are The Tama-Glama, The Hells Bells Beach, The Cable Beach ‘Stairway to the Moon’ and The South Avoca Elevator.

Absolut Oz – subtitled ‘A Baz Luhrmann Production’ – is the first Australian limited edition Absolut Vodka which joins a notable repertoire of other editions celebrating iconic global destinations including Absolut London, Absolut Brooklyn (NYC), Absolut Mexico and Absolut SF (San Francisco). This innovative approach in creating new and inspiring limited editions has maintained Absolut Vodka’s positioning at the very height of the worldwide Vodka market for over two decades.

Absolut Oz’s spiced orange flavour profile reflects the explosion of the spiced spirits trend which is currently escalating around the world. The flavours by Absolut are driving growth for the vodka flavour segment here in Australia, and currently represents 95% of this market sector nationally*.

Absolut Oz will available at online liquor store from March 2014 and will feature a specially designed neck tag with story notes, images and recipes for each of the four cocktails created by Luhrmann.
