Pikes Polish Hill River Estate is comprised of approximately 100 hectares of rolling slopes in Polish Hill River, an eastern sub-region of the Clare Valley. Our vineyards are planted on easterly to south easterly aspects which protects the vines and grapes from the afternoon sun on hot summer days.

Soils are generally described as red brown over clay, with broken bluestone and slate subsoil. This provides good conditions for drainage during our cool, wet winters and low to moderate nutrient level in the soils. This has the effect of keeping grape yields naturally low which increases the concentration of flavour, aroma and tannin compounds within the berries. The estate is planted with a diverse range of varieties including the Clare Valley stalwarts of riesling, shiraz, cabernet, and malbec. There’s also sauvignon blanc, semillon, tempranillo, sangiovese, chardonnay, pinot grigio, fiano, mourvedre, merlot and savignan.

We also buy a small amount of fruit from a handful of carefully selected Clare Valley growers, some of whom have been supplying us grapes for more than 20 years. With our winery situated on site, we harvest our fruit in the cool of night and deliver it to the winery to be chilled down and pressed within 30 minutes. This is of huge benefit in keeping the fruit flavours bright and fresh in our wines, as it minimises the skin contact with the juice.
